7 advantages of DSLR Camera

“To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.”

Henri Cartier-Bresson, The Mind’s Eye: Writings on Photography and Photographers

These days, there is an endless list of Smartphones available in both Online and Offline Markets which can offer incredibly amazing camera experiences. Indeed for ‘Selfies’ Smartphones have no replacement but that’s not the end of photography. DSLR takes photography experience to a different level.

To start with, I have mentioned few Smartphones which may be considered good for photography (selected only considering front camera MPs) and then graduated to the topic per se.

To name a few are:

Oppo F9 Pro
It happens to be one good phone as far as camera is concerned. It offers Dual Rear Camera (16 MP + 2 MP) and a 25 MP front camera. Now, this is something really amazing!

Honor Play
It is another good camera phone which offers 16MP + 2MP rear camera and 16MP front camera.

Motorola One Power
It is yet another amazing newly launched exclusive Flipkart product which offers 16MP + 5MP rear camera and 16MP front camera. From my point of view, considering its other features and battery life, this seems to be a good deal!

What DSLR has to Offer?

01. Quality of photographs

Puducherry
  • As compared to any Smartphone camera having similar resolution to that of a DSLR, a DSLR will have better image quality.
  • It has a bigger Image Sensor which allows larger pixel sizes.
  • A DSLR has much better performance at higher ISO values (1600 and above) as compared to any Smartphone or Point-and-Shoot Camera.
  • It has built in Noise Reduction (which is also there in Smartphones though!)
  • A photograph captured from DSLR definitely looks richer in colour and contrast.

02. Depth of Field

  • A DSLR can facilitate to change ‘Depth of Field’, thus you can control the ‘Background Blur’ on photograph which is also called ‘Bokeh’.
  • You can get variations by playing with Aperture Mode using Manual Focus.

03. Shutter Speed

Slow Shutter Speed
  • Using a DSLR one can vary shutter speed as per requirements.
  • Above two images taken from my DSLR are good examples of slow and fast shutter speeds.

04. Freedom to change Lenses and use accessories

  • DSLR allows a wide range of lenses and accessories that can be used.
  • Of course, such abundance of accessories aren’t available for Smartphones and Point-and-Shoot Cameras.

05. Through the lens (TTL) Viewing

  • Unlike Smartphones or Point-and-Shoot Cameras, using DSLR, one can actually see the subject that they want to capture.
  • It is ‘What You See is What You Get‘.

06. Low Battery Consumption

  • DSLRs are built to remain in ‘Sleep Mode‘. Thus reducing the battery consumptions. The power consumption of any DSLR is akin to that of any wrist watch until Shutter Release is depressed.
  • Necessary power is consumed only when a particular mode is switched-on unlike Smartphones or Point-and-Shoot Cameras where battery is utilised to enable all the features at any point of time.

07. Complete control over Photography

  • Manual Mode of DSLR gives complete control over photography.
  • From controlling light which you want to enter the camera to the time frame you want to keep the aperture open, one can have complete control over it.

“I had rescued the moment by using my camera and in that way had found how to stop time and hold it. No one could take that image away from me because I owned it.”

 Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones

Creativity knows no limits. Of course, it’s not the camera or brand of camera which makes the difference but the person behind it. I remember, photographs clicked during college days still becomes live whenever seen even today. There were no DSLRs with us in those days yet those photos made good memories. It’s never the camera but the emotions behind photos which makes the mark.

Needless to say, DSLRs definitely adds another dimension in making memories. I have been using DSLR from past 5 years. Do share your views and comments, whether Smartphone Cameras can completely regenerate the magic of DSLRs!
