APPLIQUE SAGA

Every era needs its own manual of handicraft, and if that is so, Applique form of Art will be it’s first chapter. Elegant, eternal & unique: might sound apt to define this beautiful form of art which involved sewing or pasting pieces of fabric in different forms onto a larger piece to form a picture or pattern. I confess, it was love at first sight for me!

Etymologically, the word ‘Appliqué’ has roots from Latin word ‘applico’ which means ‘I Apply’ and from French word ‘appliquer’ which means ‘attach’. As far as making a masterpiece saree is concerned, it takes good couple of days to create one! After all, magnificence is always handcrafted.

The process involves designing the saree, tracing the design on fabric, pastingcloth pieces, cutting of designs, tidying the saree, stitching & finishing the saree which might be polished too! The process is very intrinsic, interesting and a treat to watch.

I was fortunate enough to get a chance to visit GVCS NGO (Gramin Vikas Evam Chetna Sansthan) in Barmer, Rajasthan. I felt flabbergasted to meet the artisans and see their artwork. Life seldom blesses you with such chances. I totally fell in love with this art. I realised that art is expression of feelings that an artist has experienced.

One will find it really difficult to resist the temptation of possessing the appliqué artwork. Sarees, suits, bedsheets, cushion covers, wall hangings and what not, applique needlework can be found in anything and everything. My love for sarees pulled me towards a green and beige coloured spell bounding 6 yard saree with the mirror work on it. I personally admire this colour combination as it always remains naïve and youthful…moreover, getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

I paired this applique saree with a high neck bow blouse crafted using same fabric. I thank my tailor for this perfect fitting and mesmerising design. After all, tailoring your clothes makes all the difference!
